30 November: Sydney Cycle Ways - Council claims cycleway success, but not all are convinced

THE City of Sydney is claiming early success for its contentious new cycleways, releasing the results of a new bike count which showed an average of 40 per cent more bikes on the road during the morning peak compared with six months ago. In the evening peak, it has recorded a 29 per cent increase. Read more....

June- Report released - Developing a Community of Cycling in WA

Commonly known as the Brown Report, the Developing a Community of Cycling in WA has now been released for general comment. BWA played a significant role in bringing about this report as we recognised that there was a need for greater coordination across all aspects of riding (sport, transport and recreation).
Although we support the report, we do not agree with some of its content. BWA is currently in discussions with a variety of organisations including Bikewest and the Department of Sport and Recreation. We aim position ourselves so we can gain the best value for our members and help get more people riding more often with better infrastructure thorughout the state.

14 May - Study released confirms Benefits of bike network far outweigh cost

An inner-city network of bike paths would deliver economic benefits more than triple the cost of building it, according to the first full economic appraisal of cycleways in Australia.
The report, commissioned by the City of Sydney, says the 293-kilometre network proposed by 15 councils would deliver $506 million in economic benefits to the community over 30 years, $3.88 for every dollar spent.

21 April - The need to stay alert

BWA says cyclists, like all road users, need to pay full attention while on the road.
A woman cyclist who was killed last month after being struck by a train near Tauranga, New Zealand, is believed to have been listening to an iPod-style music player.
Any person riding their bike, like any other road user, needs to pay attention to the traffic and not be distracted. BWA recommends that riders should refrain from the use headphones while cycling. If you must listen to music, ensure the volume is low enough to hear other road users, sirens and warning bells at railway level crossings.

March 18 - Don\'t be a Gutter Bunny

The UK Institute of Advanced Motorists is urging cyclists to make themselves seen and to “claim their lane”, moving out into the middle of the lane when approaching a junction or parked cars.

Duncan Pickering, IAM Cycling Development Manager, said: \"There has been some debate as to whether cyclists should stick to the kerb or push out into the road when riding in built-up areas. Our advice to cyclists, based on a comprehensive study, is to stay near to the kerb on long even stretches, but to assert yourself when approaching a junction, pushing out into the road and putting yourself in the direct view of drivers.\"
