Ride with the Ministers
On Tuesday 23rd February Our President Paul Fiddes, was invited to participate in the 16th annual Ministers and Mayors Ride organised by the government department Bikewest and hosted by Claremont City Council.
The ride is an integral part of Bike Week and its purpose is to focus our decision makers on the merits of cycling in our community. Around 40 people participated and rode from Parliament House to the Claremont Council Chambers where Claremont Council hosted a breakfast. A number of state politicians rode along with shire mayors and councillors and key people in state government departments. These included Hon Simon O'Brien, Minister for Transport, Hon Terry Waldron, Minister for Sport, Hon John Kobelke, Hon Giz Watson to name a few. After the wild storms of Monday the bike path was littered with broken branches, sand washouts and in some parts a thick mat of leaves. It became an obstacle course and it was great to see our pollies pulling together to assist with dragging large broken branches from the bike paths! At the breakfast Simon O'Brien addressed the riders and reinforced the governments commitment to further advance the cycling infrastructure in Perth and surrounds. A key commitment is the completion of sections of the path from Peth to Fremantle.
