Cyclo Protocols

Cyclo Sportif Events are participation events, not races. Please follow the protoclos below to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable ride.

 1. General

  • Safety is paramount. While the club will make its best endeavours to improve rider safety and course safety, it is each rider’s own responsibility to adhere to the protocols listed below and to take responsibility for their own safety.
  • Event protocols are for guidance of participants, each team should ‘self regulate’.
  • There are no ‘referees’ or ‘commissars’ as the events are not races.
  • It is every participant’s responsibility to adhere to good cycling etiquette.

2. Corner Marshals and Motorbike Safety Marshals

  • Marshals are provided for your safety and the safety of others.
  • Please obey any instruction or direction by these officials.
  • This may include a direction to stop.

3. Road Rules

  •  Ride according to road rules.

4. Helmets

  • The wearing of approved helmets is mandatory.

5. iPods and Walkmans

  • The use of personal music devices such as iPods and Walkmans by riders during an event is not permitted.

6. Passing Teams / Interference

  • Do not interfere with other participant teams.
  • If another team catches your team you must allow them to pass before regrouping and separating as teams.
  • Teams must not draft off a team in front, if you catch up to another team either overtake or drop back
  • If you are in an overtaking team, you must ride in single file and do not interfere with the other team. Give multiple advance warnings as you come up to them. Remember, some of the teams may not be as experienced as you.
  • Teams must ride no more than 2 abreast and keep left at all times

7. Abandoning Riders

  • The principle of a Randonneur is to participate and to complete a set event. It follows therefore that a team should not ‘abandon’ a rider. The team should stay together even if one rider punctures. Unresolvable mechanical failures are the exception and participants will be picked up by the ‘broom wagon’.

8. Time trial bars

  • Time trial bars are discouraged.

9. Disc wheels

  • Disc wheels are discouraged.

10. Bike Type

  • Team bikes shall be consistent in type, that is, all road or all MTB. Tandems are accepted in either format.

11. Team Briefing

  • Team Briefing occurs 30 minutes before the first team starts. These briefings highlight course safety concerns. Attendance by the Team Manager or a single representative as a minimum is compulsory.

12. Event Timing

  • One team member on each team will wear a timing band. The timing band should be worn on the ankle.
  • The timing band must be returned to the registration desk at the conclusion of the event, before teams will get their lunch tickets.

The event coordinators at Cyclo Sportif pride themselves on putting on some of the safest events in WA. Please be courteous to other riders and make everyone’s day enjoyable.
