Training Advice FAQs
Q Do I need to completely deplete my glycogen stores in training?
A No. Deplete probably wasn't best word to use. What you need to be doing is training so you are using your glycogen stores and keep replacing them by eating carbohydrates. You certainly shouldn't be trying to completely run out of or exhaust your energy stores in the muscles. This makes it too hard to train and you feel completely exhausted. The more that you use your energy stores and replenish them, the better the muscles get at storing and using glycogen.
Q Do I have to eat glucose? Where do I get it?
A When I say glucose, think carbohydrate. Carbohydrates are broken down by the body into glucose for use by the muscles. Eating foods such as fruit, vegetables, bread, pasta and rice are best. This is no different to a normal healthy diet.
Q Provided I eat within 2 hours of exercise is that okay to replace glycogen stores?
A The muscles are more receptive to storing carbohydrates for about 2 hours after exercise but they are the most receptive just after exercising. Certainly don't wait for an hour to eat. Eat carbohydrates as soon after exercise as possible. Eating while you are exercising is also advisable if you can. You'll certainly have to do this during the 5 dams ride so t would be good to try doing it as part of your training.
