History of Bicycling Western Australia

  • Cyclo Sportif Club of Australia Inc was registered in 2005 and started out as a “club” running participation ‘Grand Fondo’ style of events.
  • Cyclo Sportif’s mission was “recreational fun for serious cyclists”.
  • Cyclo Sportif was run by a group of hard working volunteers and in 2008 employed our first part-time staff.
  • In January 2010, the organisation of Cyclo Sportif Club of Australia Inc re-branded to Bicycling Western Australia and our mission is to get “more people cycling more often”.
  • Bicycling Western Australia is still run by a dedicated volunteer committee and supported by three full-time members.
  • Cyclo Sportif has remained a major part of the organisation and is the popular participation series of events arm of the organisation.
  • Under Bicycling Western Australia, we have exceeded the expectations of the board with a strong membership base, a thriving events program and numerous successful community programs.
  •  Under our mission of “More People Cycling More Often” we have aimed to improve and develop bike riding and the health and wellbeing of the WA community.
  • Bicycling Western Australia caters for all types of riders from novice and young family riders to the cafe and lyrca cyclists.
  • As well as the Cyclo Sportif participation series we have developed a strong Ride2Work program, Ride2School program, and the iconic Dams Challenge participation event.
  • Bicycling Western Australia also work closely with other bike riding organisations, councils and government organisations in an effort to achieve an effective and coordinated approach to getting more people riding bicycles throughout WA.
  • Bicycling Western Australia is now WA’s largest and most prominent bicycling organisation.

People naturally have many questions before they start. Hopefully we will try to answer some of the more popular ones below.

WHO IS BICYCLING WESTERN AUSTRALIA?

Bicycling Western Australia a not for profit, self-funded community organisation representing all bike riders in WA.  By getting involved you are contributing to the improvement of bike riding throughout WA.

MEMBERSHIP

Bicycling Western Australia offers a membership which includes Australia’s premium bike crash insurance as well as many other benefits.

HOW MUCH IS MEMBERSHIP?

From 1 July 2016, membership rates are:

  • $124 for individual
  • $104 for concession (full time students, seniors and unemployed)
  • $156 for a family of 2, ie a couple or a parent and child living under one roof
  • $176 for family of 3+, ie family living under one roof includes children up to 21 years or 25 years if a full time student)
  • $104 for affiliate membership, ie members of Cycling Australia who hold a racing licence

WHAT DOES INSURANCE COVER ME FOR

Injury to yourself (personal injury), injury you cause to someone else and damage you cause to someone else’s property – any time while riding a bicycle in Australia or New Zealand.

Bicycling Western Australia membership does not cover your bike or accessories.

HOW DO I MAKE A CLAIM?

It is best to send us a message so we can log your claim, please do so through the contact us page.

Please include your rider number, date and location of crash, brief summary of what happened and any other relevant details.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN JOINING OR RENEWING

Membership cards are processed every week.  You should receive a new membership card within two to four weeks of renewing your membership.  If you have any questions, please contact us.

CYCLO SPORTIF EVENTS

WHAT IS CYCLO SPORTIF?

Cyclo Sportif is the name of our series of participation events (they are NOT races) which are serious fun for the recreational cyclist.  Most of our events are timed “team” events and have something for ALL types of riders, whether you are just starting out or an experienced athlete.  We have over 5,000 people join us each year who enjoy riding in a safe and fun environment.

DO I NEED TO BE A MEMBER TO RIDE?

No, you do not have to be a member to ride in any of our events.  An advantage of being a member is you are covered by our 24/7 bike crash insurance and also receive discounted entry to our events.

We are delighted to welcome new faces to our events, so please feel free to come and try.

WHEN ARE YOUR EVENTS?

We have two Cyclo Sportif participation rides scheduled in 2017.  Events are held in various stunning locations in and around Perth and regional areas.  View our calendar of events for further information.

HOW FIT DO I HAVE TO BE?

We have a distance for everyone, so if you only ride once a week, you may like to do the ‘C’ distance (usually around 30km) or if you ride more regularly you might like to do the ‘B’ distance (approximately 60km).  If you are an experienced rider then the ‘A’ distance (up to 110km) might be for you.

IS EVERYONE ELSE FAST? WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN’T KEEP UP?

Our events are team-based events and we have team protocols which must be adhered to.  One of the protocols is to keep as a team, so if someone is faster, then they can assist you with a gentle push.  However, you should look for a team where you all have about the same ability.

DO I NEED ALL THE KIT?

You will need a reliable bike – a road bike is preferable but a mountain bike or hybrid bike is acceptable, provided all your team’s bikes are the same (i.e. all mountain bikes or all road bikes etc.).

A good pair of bicycling shorts is a must for comfort and suitable clothing to cope with weather.  Additionally, a reasonable pair of cycling shoes and set of pedals that you “click” in to will also make the experience more pleasurable.

Once you get the cycling bug then visit one of our sponsors and they will help you get fitted out with everything you’ll need.

You will need to bring along a spare inner tube, a pump, a puncture repair kit and a bottle filled with an energy drink/water and energy food/bar/gels.

It’s compulsory to wear a bike helmet.

DO I ENTER AS A TEAM OR INDIVIDUAL?

You can either enter as a team (i.e. ride with friends, family and colleagues in teams of four to nine riders) or you can enter as an individual and we will place you in a team suitable to your ability.

WHAT DISTANCE ARE THE CYCLO SPORTIF EVENTS?

Designed for all types of riders, you can choose to ride 30km ‘C’, 60km ‘B’ or up to 110km ‘A’.  Every course is different and takes you through stunning locations in and around Perth. (Please note that distances are approximate).

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY FEES?

Standard entry fees for our 2017 events are:

  • BWA member – $46
  • Non-member – $66
  • Junior BWA member – $26
  • Junior non-member – $46

Prices may vary depending on event location and course.  Please refer to the invidual event page for correct pricing.

Please note that non-members are NOT covered by insurance.

WHEN DO REGISTRATIONS CLOSE?

Registrations usually close at midnight on the Tuesday one week before the event. Registrations may close earlier if the event reaches capacity.  Sometimes we put a limit on the amount of entries to ensure the safety of riders.  To avoid disappointment, we recommend you enter early.  Late registrations will not be accepted.

DO I HAVE TO PRE-REGISTER OR CAN I JUST ARRIVE ON THE DAY?

You must enter before the event as we do not take registrations on the day.  Registrations close at midnight on the Tuesday one week before the event.

I HAVE JUST JOINED AS A MEMBER AND WHEN I TRY TO REGSITER THE SCREEN DISPLAYS A ‘MEMBER MISMATCH’ NOTE?

The event registration system requires 48 hours (two business days) to upload new or renewing memberships.  In order to receive the member pricing you will need to wait for the registration system to updated.

I HAVE REGISTERED FOR AN EVENT AND PAID, HOW DO I KNOW IF MY REGISTRATION IS CONFIRMED?

Once you have completed the registration and payment process you will receive an email and receipt.  This is confirmation that we have received your registration and we will contact you leading up to the event with further information.

I HAVE ENTERED THE EVENT, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Rider Information Pack with all the ride details will be emailed to all registered riders on the Wednesday before the event.  The information pack is also posted to the website.

I CAN NO LONGER RIDE, CAN I GET A REFUND?

No, we do not issue refunds.  For full details on our Refund Policy please click here.

CAN I ENTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL?

Yes, we will put you in a composite team of your ability.

WHAT TYPE OF BIKE CAN I RIDE?

Team bikes need to be consistent in type, that is, all road or all MTB. Tandems are accepted in either format.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS ONLY THREE OF US IN A TEAM?

We will join your team up with another team of the same ability.

CAN I CHANGE THE DISTANCE OF MY RIDE BEFORE THE EVENT?

We will make every effort to change your distance category before the day, however, it is not always possible.  Rider packs, start lists and timing bands are usually prepared several days before the event.  Please e-mail us with your change request and we will do our best.

CAN I CHANGE THE DISTANCE OF MY RIDE ON THE DAY?

No, we cannot accept changes on the day.  You can choose to ride another distance, but your time may not be accurate.

IF ONE TEAM MEMBER IS UNABLE TO FINISH THE RIDE, CAN THE OTHER TEAMS CONTINUE?

The principle of our Cyclo Sportif events is to participate and to complete a set event.  Teams should not ‘abandon’ their riders.  The team should stay together even if one rider punctures. Unresolvable mechanical failures are the exception and participants can make their way back to the start/ finish area on their own.

DO I GET A MEAL AFTER THE EVENT?

No, following feedback from participants we no longer include a meal as part of the entry price. The entry fees were reduced in 2016 to be ‘ride-only’. You have the option to purchase a meal on the day.

CYCLO SPORTIF TO BICYCLING WESTERN AUSTRALIA

 Bicycling Western Australia has recently evolved in scope from what was originally named Cyclo Sportif Club of Australia Inc.

Cyclo Sportif was established in 2004, its purpose to represent ALL bicyclists and to get more people cycling more often, offering safe and fun participation rides. Our members strongly supported Cyclo Sportif through these initial stages, and we soon grew to over 5,000 members – making us the largest bicycling body in WA.

Today, we understand the need to serve a wider purpose for our dedicated members.

We feel that in order to form a stronger voice in the bicycling community, we must grow to embody a broader organisation to better represent your needs as a WA bike rider.

Thus was born Bicycling Western Australia

Under the Bicycling Western Australia umbrella, the Cyclo Sportif Series remains unchanged, offering participation team-style events in favourite and new locations each year.

Increasing the scope of our organisation as Bicycling Western Australia has allowed us to offer significantly improved membership benefits as part of our membership package. We are also now better equipped to become a strong voice in WA, promoting the interest of bike riders to local and state organisations.

Bicycling Western Australia, like Cyclo Sportif, is still owned collectively by its WA based members and investing in the future of WA bicycling.
