Quality cycling infrastructure is a key driver in getting more people on bikes.  Bicycling Western Australia continues to lobby for more separated facilities, better designed roads and more funding.  Being an independent organisation, we are in the unique position to be able to work with the many stakeholders to ensure the rights and needs of bike riders are protected.

24 September 2015 The appointment of Malcolm Turnbull as the 29th Prime Minister of Australia opens up a number of opportunities for bike riders across the nation.

Integrated transport planning is back on the agenda for the federal government following the announcement of a new Ministry for Cities and the Built Environment. The Hon. Jamie Briggs MP will work with state and local governments to develop the Turnbull Government’s agenda for Australia’s cities.

There is an urgent need to for all forms of active travel to be supported at a national level and we are seeking a commitment from the Turnbull Government to support active transport at a national level.

In his announcement of the new ministry, Prime Minister Turnbull made specific reference to the importance of transport integration: “Integration is critical. We shouldn’t be discriminating between one form of transit and another. Roads are not better than mass transit or vice versa, each of them has their place. Infrastructure should be assessed objectively and rationally on its merits. There is no place for ideology here at all. The critical thing is to ensure that we get the best outcomes in our cities.”

There is now bipartisan political support for liveable cities at the federal level, with this new ministry matching the opposition’s Shadow Ministry for Cities, Infrastructure and Transport headed by the Hon. Anthony Albanese MP.
The Turnbull Government is well placed to commit to Australia’s first federal bicycle infrastructure fund to unlock the massive health, economic and liveability benefits of bike-friendly cities. Other countries that have already committed to a federal fund include the United Kingdom, USA and New Zealand.

This bodes well for the people who would like to ride bikes as multiple studies have shown that bike infrastructure offers the best return on investment of the menu of transport options.

The election of Mr Turnbull as Prime Minister and the creation of a federal Minister for Cities and the Built Environment presents new opportunity. We look forward to collaborating with the other state-based cycling organisation to support the Prime Minister and Minister Biggs in transforming how our cities cater for bike riders and other forms of active transport.

10 September 2012 – On Sunday, 9 September 2012 69 volunteers, 69 bicycles, 60 cars and one bus gathered in Canberra to recreate a world-renowned photograph taken more than 20 years ago to demonstrate the advantages of bicycle travel compared to cars. Click here to read the media release.
