Cycling safety forum

On behalf of the Road Safety Council we extend an invitation to anyone interested to participate in a series of cycling safety forums designed to address the involvement of cyclists in serious crashes.

The popularity of cycling is increasing with many people choosing to ride for a variety of reasons including increased congestion on the roads, better health, the cost of parking and the environment. We all share responsibility for road safety and our challenge is to make our roads safer for all road users.

As outlined in the WA Road Safety Strategy Towards Zero, to effectively address road safety in our state we need to strive for a Safe System based on four cornerstones:

  • safe road use
  • safe roads and roadsides
  • safe speeds
  • safe vehicles

To ensure each these cornerstones are explored for cyclists, we encourage you to participate in the cycling safety forums – a series of three forums based on the successful Swedish “OLA” process.

What will be covered in the forums

  1. Forum number one will focus on gathering Objective data, including facts, statistics, relevant research, behavioural studies etc.
  2. At the second forum, we will work together using the objective data we have gathered to develop a List of solutions/actions based on the Safe System approach to road safety.
  3. At the third and final forum we will develop concrete Action plans outlining who will do what, when it will be completed and how it will be evaluated.

Forum No. 1 – Saturday, 14 May 2011

The first forum was held on Saturday, 14 May 2011 from 8.45am to 4pm at the Burswood Entertainment Complex; Great Eastern Highway, Burswood. There was no cost to attend. Dates for the second and third forums are still to be determined.
